THE END! - THE LAST BLOG...

So this is it.... This is the last blog - In 1 day, 19 hours and 2 minutes to the SOPIS course is over, but who's counting!!!
This has been 8 different weeks. In the beginning it was very slow to get through the day, but the last couple of weeks flew by fast. It was an experience and it is really nice that I know New York better now than if I had to start from scratch in September.

The courses were good. I'm now a better writer and my language is much better and I really know where Lower East Side is located...

It was a good summer and I'm very glad that I didn't dropped out, even though I got sick and wasn't sure what to do.

I'm not sure what more to write so I guess I'll leave it here and maybe update it on my way home - I have to do something in 8 hours!!

Peter Allen

The day before yesterday we had a very good guest lecture. Peter Allen who is a British product designer showed us some of his work and it was very interesting to see some of the designs and concepts he showed us.
Unfortunately his web page is under construction (www.knowear.net) - I really wanted to see more of his work... His presentation ended quiet weird because he thought he had more slides, so we were not prepared to answer him questions right at that moment... I liked his work so I hope to see more of it in the future!

How are things doing?

Fine – thanks for asking.

I got a flu last week and that wasn’t a great experience. I feel better now, but I am still tired and a bit dizzy sometimes.

We are still working with Lower East Side in design class, so that’s an area name in NY I know how to spell ;-) – our work in the other classes is also nice. Jeremy teaches us to write cover letters and resumes and Pamela took us to one of my favorite places in NY, The Guggenheim Museum. We saw "the shapes of space" and it was the third time I saw it, but Guggenheim is a nice place to come, so I was OK by me.

Well, we have 18 days left and of course I hope to pass, because I really want to start in September and do the stuff I am interested in – that’s why I applied Parsons :-)

Lower East Side Tenement Museum

First of all, I'm so sorry that I was late - it will never happen again!
This was a very interesting/different museum and I kind of liked it...! I came late so that was maybe why I had to observe what was going on at the beginning. A man told me on the way up (to the others) that some of the students were parents in the 1900 and I was their son...? I really didn't know what I was going in to, I knew it was something about a storyteller, but I got a bit confused when I arrived.
I think it was fun and it was a new experience for me, so I think that I paid more attention.

The tour afterwards was also very good. The man new what he was talking about and that he had acting skills made it more interesting. There is always something new to learn about Lower East Side ;-)

Halfway through!

We are now more than halfway through and the time is now going a bit faster so that's great. Last week we had pizza night and we also had to tell the other sections about our studies in design class and it was nice to see what some of the others were doing.

We also had a guest lecture in the design class - an artist/architect that, after some technical difficulties that shouldn't have happened, showed us his work trough the year. It was a nice presentation and he had some very nice things that could be good inspiration later on.

I had a lot of work to do in the weekend and also some homework, so I didn't do much even though I got a visit from Europe! Some sightseeing and a little bit of shopping maybe... ;-)

I'm looking forward to the end of this course, so we can start working on what we really came to Parsons for - I've seen some of the other students private portfolio and it's looking very professional - it's going to be fun to see what they can do in a design class without worrying about their English skills :-)

Cooper Hewitt

The Cooper Hewitt museum was a very interesting experience. I really like to see the new products and where the future is heading. There were some good examples between and a lot of them, I believe, are a part of modeling the future.

Our guide was also good to tell the important facts even though it felt like she wanted to get it over with. She was very informative and professional.

Isamu Noguchi

The sculpture that Noguchi had created are very beautiful. He created some out door areas that I really like. Some of his sculptures are very creative and it's really nice to see which environment he had placed them.
At the museum I was really impressed about the outdoor area, the sculpture was fitting their surroundings.

On the 2nd floor there was a small model of a house and its garden and it was really nice to see how he had created the indoor look with the shaped granite.

The MOMA experience!

As I mentioned to the class, I wasn't so keen about the "art" Richard Serra had made... - I just think it's the size of the sculpture that does it nice to look at. - I also have to say that I'm not the right person to ask about art - becasue I don't see art as many other people do. I don't see paintings and sculptures as art but more a creative work and nothing else. For example, architecture is more a way of art. When people can calculate, draw and create a building like WTC or The Guggenheim Museum, it's more like art, to me!

Lower East Side

The very first impression of Lower East Side, was that is a bit dirty and there is some strange people between, but when we went a bit around it seemed like people were nice and friendly - some of them.

Then we went to a famous deli called "Katz's Deli" and it was a funny place because it had a lot of pictures with famous people - even some danish ;-)
